I Never Saw This Coming
HOW MY GRANDSON
CHANGED MY LIFEby Leonard Pitt
My son got his new girlfriend pregnant on the second date. Knowing there would be no long-term relationship, I fought against the child coming into the world.
But at birth, one look is all it took. I was transformed in an instant.
This is the story of my grandson Miles and me.
When Miles was very small he loved to fall sleep on my tummy. One night when he was five years old, lying there, he lifted his head, looked me straight in the eye and said, “You are the papa I could have. I am the son you could have. Life never ends even when you’re dead. True love never dies.”
Five years old! Stunned does not describe my reaction. There are many more such surprises in these pages.
For parents I’ve included substantial footnotes on child-rearing, the importance of touch, and more. Read excerpts.

December 21
It was the evening of the winter solstice. We were in the car driving home when Miles said, “Papa, this is the fastest dark day ever!” How did he know? I hadn’t said anything and he hadn’t heard it at school either, he said.
February 4
His birthday was coming up next month. As we got out of bed Miles said, “Papa, you know what I want for my birthday?”“What?” I said.
“A hug.”
“I’ll give you a million of them,” I said.
“Because you’re my gift. We have to hug every hour,” he said.
March 11
I asked Miles, “What’s the difference between happy and sad?”“Happy,” he said, “is full of joy. Sad is tired, bored, slow moving.”
“And what does happy and sad feel like in your body?”
“Happy, your heart is open.”
“And sad?”
“Like a broken heart.”
In a week’s time, Miles will be six years old. Some children in anticipation of their birthday would say, “I’m six years old!” But Miles said, “I’ve been on this planet for six years!” ....
